After the last few bits of bad news heres something good. I have been informed that ELLEN (Mrs MAX GROSSKREUTZ) has now reached 101 down home in Australia. An item in Peter Whites latest issue of the Aussie mag - Speedway World - has given this good news. When in the U K with Max Ellen was called on to make presentations at some speedway meetings so you can see she was involved at the business end of the sport. [Max could probably not do the presentations as he was probably busy building up a bike for one of his many customers, maybe Bluey Wilkinson or our Bert and the Stars outfit here at the Firs Stadium].

Sad news again. One time Norwich Stars second halfer VIC RIDGEON, who went on to represent Yarmouth Bloaters, Wolverhampton, Sunderland & the top team in the old Southern Area League, Rye House, and kept the cinders flying in old-time demos has passed away in Essex. The numbers continue to diminish but someone up there is gathering a good team ...................... R I P Vic

Whilst on a bus trip to Cromer today I passed the site of the old Firs Stadium. Lookng across opposite it appeared the Firs Pub has also "folded". Another person on the bus gave me the sad news that the present occupiers had indeed left and the Firs is on the way out

The E E N has printed the story and the Firs Pub is indeed shut. The business has closed due to the credit crunch. The Landlord has promised that anyone who had booked a function at the Firs would have deposits reimbursed and not be left out of pocket. At least there is one honest person who will stand by his customers

Eric Williams is suffering again in Australia. His daughter Jenny and well-respected Australian Historian "Rosco" are keeping us up to date on the Speedway History sites of the present situation with this.

BILLY BALES has now reached his 80th birthday (June 6, the same day as my 70th). It doesn't seem all that long ago we saw him take his first rides at the fabulous Firs Stadium. Young "Andy" is now involved in grasstrack so the Bales Dynasty still lives on

And someone is hoping to reopen the Firs pub in the not too distant future as well. (Pity it is not a rebuilt Firs Stadium)

WALLY HIGGS, an Aussie who had a spell with the Bloaters at Yarmouth, passed away recently. He also raced the Australian midgetcars down under after he "retired" from the real sport of speedway ............. R I P Wally

Another ex-Star has passed away. News has come through that "Happy Hungarian" SANDOR LEVAI has now joined the Stars team in the "Sky League" Sandor rode for us in the 1964 season. When George Major decided to go Provincial Sandor took the place George vacated and promptly got into the swing of things keeping a team place for the rest of the season. Sandor also rode in many events at non-league Rye House that season and won the Rayments Rosebowl meeting there ............. R I P Sandor

I was talking to a man, who has just moved into a place near me, yesterday. He told me that LEWIS LOWN who was a second-halfer with Peter Atkins & Derek Strutt back in the 50s at the Firs had a heart attack and passed on not long back. I remember Lewis riding and he would always come over & have a chat at the ReUnions. Whilst he never "made it" in speedway he was a trier. His main problem was that he could not master "gating" like Derek & Peter. DEREK STRUTT passed on a while back but Peter Atkins is still with us. R I P Lewis

A bigger mystery "where are they now" is what has happened to Bryan Tungate?
I was regularly in touch with him on many things for some years - then about three or four years ago it all went quiet. An update on here would be great - and my email address is
speedstox12@yahoo.com
If anyone reads this and can reply - many thanks indeed.
